Self – Assessment - 2
2. Which social issues concern
you? What service activities could
address these issues?
The social issues that concern me are discrimination, unemployment,
violence, education, and homelessness. Volunteering in the Youth Leadership of
Greensboro addresses the issues of education and homelessness. To address
unemployment, I am planning to help to implement the idea of volunteer
organizations that offer training and resources to provide new means of income.
To address discrimination and violence, I am also planning to help implement
the idea of creative youth programs to entertain children and help them meet
and learn more about other people of different backgrounds.
3.
What are your strengths that will help you complete your CAS
requirements?
I have leadership skills from different projects and experiences,
which allows me to lead and work with team members on issues. I am a
participant in many volunteering opportunities, so my experiences with helping
out and giving back to the community will allow me to think of creative and
effective solutions. My participation and commitment to many clubs, sports, and
other extra curriculars allow me to master balancing, which allows me to
prioritize and organize issues.
4.
What are your weaknesses that might interfere with CAS?
I am self-conscious so whenever I am with a group of people,
this weakness hinders my productivity because I am too unnecessarily worried
about judgement. I am a people-pleaser so I try too hard to make others happy
and almost never reject an idea, which does not allow me to give my own
personal opinion or create my own voice unique from others.
5.
Project (will constitute at least three blog posts and part of the final
reflection): a
collaborative, well-sequenced series of experiences over a minimum of
one month that addresses one or more of the CAS strands.
Purposes: sustained collaboration,
teamwork, show initiative, demonstrate perseverance, demonstrate
responsibility, engage in
problem-solving and
decision making, examine ethics
Examples: Service
and activity-students plan and participate in the maintenance of a community
garden
Service and creativity-students identify that children at a local
school need backpacks and design and create backpacks
Service and creativity-preparing and performing for a
benefit concert
a. Select one issue of global concern
that interests you.
An issue of global concern is education.
b. Under which CAS strand(s) does it
best fall—creativity, activity, and/or service?
This best falls under service because I am providing
assistance for others.
c. Which learner objectives would it
best support?
Identify strengths and areas for growth. Demonstrates challenges
have been undertaken and new skills developed. Show commitment and perseverance.
Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance. Recognize and
consider the ethics of choices and actions.
d. Brainstorm potential projects.
Creating presentations and activities that deliver the
message of the significance of education and the strong impacts, both
positively and negatively, it has on reality and our lives.
e. With whom or with which groups
will you need to collaborate?
I will need to collaborate with others who are interested in
the same issues, who would like to demonstrate or improve leadership and
teamwork, and who are genuinely concerned with helping others and creating a
change that can positively influence those outside of our home (i.e. around the
world).
